BRIEF:
The departmental studio has moved from a top floor former refectory to a top floor former office block, located in another part of the city. This moment provides and oppurtunity for consideration of what constitutes studio and where is HERE.
Your deliberation will be aided by focusing on these themes:
HOME: What defines 'home' in the sense of studio. What constitues the particular sense associated with a base, a place where certain events occur.
CONTEXT: Explore and define the nature of this part of the city and this part of this part of the city ie. the studio.
ADJACENCY: The entire design school is now under one roof, this is novel. What might this mean in relation to studio practise?
PALIMPSEST: The reuse of buildinggs and the resulatnt layering is a central elementn of interior design. How do traces of prior occupation, memory and the changing complexion of neighbourhood impact on the design, perception and reorganisation of constructed spaces.
EDGE: Design activity is predisposed to being nomadic. Site visits, client meetings and the sourcing of supplies alongside miniaturised and wireless technology, instant and portable communitcations contribute to a blurring of the connections between place and activity.
